At this year’s Culture of Life pro-life banquet the keynote speaker was Dr. Theresa Burke, she spoke to the audience about the traumatic effects of abortion. Dr. Burke is the founder of Rachel’s Vineyard, an organization devoted to post-abortion ministry and healing. She combines spiritual, emotional, and psychological dimensions to her treatments with integrated scripture and counseling psychology. She is a pioneer for women in a culture that ignores the pain inflicted by abortion.

Dr. Burke’s work with women who have experienced profound trauma is a difficult endeavor because she encounters the direct effects of abortion on women. She spoke about the psychological symptoms of abortion trauma:
2014-banquet

  • Panic attacks
  • Hyper arousal
  • Flashbacks
  • Risk-taking behavior
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Eating disorders
  • Drug and alcohol addictions
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Repeated abortions
  • Divorce

Dr. Burke regards these behaviors as abnormal and extremely crippling to women’s mental, spiritual, and physical health. Dr. Burke believes that the causes of these behaviors are experiences associated with abortion much like that of war survivors or victims of sexual abuse.

She offered examples of these symptoms in the lives of celebrities such as Judy Garland, Angelina Jolie, Princess Diana, and Britney Spears to demonstrate how real women have changed after having an abortion. The stories told devastating truths about abortions, collapsed marriages, anorexia, paranoia, sleeping disorders, and more.

Angelina Jolie’s tattoo on her stomach says it all; “What nourishes me, destroys me.”

With the knowledge that Dr. Burke has revealed, there is no wonder why women desperately need organizations like Rachel’s Vineyard. Dr. Burke’s work allows women to finally come to terms with their forbidden grief so that they can heal. PROLIFE Across AMERICA is grateful that Rachel’s Vineyard is an available resource for those who call our 1-800-366-7773 Hotline. As Dr. Burke said to the group, “In a culture of death, the Lord brings life.”
